If we just take the time to look around — whether walking through the neighborhood, visiting a park, or running errands — you may be surprised by what you discover. Inspiration is all around us! A splash of color, a clever design, or a small act of imagination can spark creative ideas in our own lives, at home, or even in the classroom. When we notice and appreciate these everyday examples, we remind ourselves that creativity is not just about making something new — it’s about seeing new possibilities in the things we already have.

Check out these examples from Peace Park (above). This brightly painted picnic bench might inspire you to transform old furniture at home instead of throwing it away. You can collect random rocks in nature or have students bring them into the classroom where they can use their imagination to make different patterns, or invent a new bug or creature.

I found these cool structures at Kohler-Andrae State Park. They might inspire you to have your kids collect sticks and branches from your backyard during Fall cleanup. Add a blanket or towel and you have a fun fort and shade from the sun.

Here are just a couple of examples of the amazing structures you can see outside at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. You can have kids create a structure or an abstract design from small rocks or pebbles using clay, tacky glue or mud.

  • Getting your whole family or classroom involved in a creative project will build a sense of pride in the family or classroom community and working collaboratively will strengthen relationships and communication skills.

  • Up cycling & using eco-friendly materials, like found and used items, will not only encourage creative thinking, it teaches environmental responsibility, and reduces waste.

  • Exploring, designing, and building with natural materials, give kids the chance to tap into their thinking skills, and build knowledge and skills related to design and construction (S.T.E.M.).

Creativity is everywhere — we just have to look for it. When we notice creative details in the world around us, we begin to appreciate small acts of innovation, reuse, and imagination---So the next time you’re out and about, take a moment to notice the details that make you smile or spark an idea. You never know where that spark might lead!
